Edified Through Prophecy

But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 1 Cor. 14:3 (NKJV)

The apostle Paul, speaking to the church in Corinth wrote, “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4). Paul then clearly states that prophecy is one of the gifts given by God (v.10), and so the manifestation of prophecy is given for the profit of all.

Prophecy simply means to speak forth, or to proclaim. Sometimes prophecy has the character of foretelling the future (Acts 21:10-11; 27:21-26), but there is also a second way prophecy will be spoken, and it is through forth-telling. This is the divinely inspired speaking of God’s word, and it is much more than just preaching God’s word.

Prophecy is the Lord’s way of speaking to us, His church, through His written word. This type of prophecy is used to edify and build us up as Christian men and women. We see Paul speaking of this very thing, saying, “But he who prophesies speaks edification… to men” (1 Cor. 14:3). Joshua knew that he needed to study God’s prophecies so they would be on his lips and guide him in the way he should live.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Josh. 1:8 (NKJV)

So as we sit under the steady teaching of God’s word, we will find that we are actually being rooted, built up, and established in Him. As this happens we are being prepared to weather the storms that will eventually come our way, and in due season we will bring forth abundant fruit.

In addition to strengthening us for the trials in life, we are also being strengthened in truth so we will not be cheated through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men (Colossians 2:7-8).  A gift for all of us indeed. Thank You Lord Jesus.

I want to encourage you to think and pray about these things today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 Corinthians 14:3-4, what can believers expect to receive from the gift of prophecy?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you experienced the power of the Holy Spirit come upon you as you spoke forth the word of God to others?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek the Lord to give you the gift of prophecy so you may be equipped to speak mightily when sharing His word with others.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, I know that apart from You I can do nothing (John 15:5). I need Your Spirit to empower me to share Jesus, and Your word with others. I ask for every good gift needed to do what You have called me to do. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed Pastor Scott
