Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. Acts 8:4 (NKJV)

When Jesus was crucified, His disciples were scattered.  When persecution came against the early church they were scattered as well.  When I read these stories within the Bible I am reminded of how God allows persecution and trials into our lives to strengthen, teach, and prepare us.  He also allows these things to scatter us to places we would otherwise not be, to bring us into relationships we would otherwise not have, and to allow us to experience things we would otherwise not experience.  To be scattered is our calling.

·      We have been scattered to plant the seeds of the Gospel message as we go (Matt. 10:7)

·      We have been scattered to treat others just as we want to be treated (Luke 6:31)

·      We have been scattered to show the love of Jesus to our neighbors (Matt. 19:19), and our enemies (Matt. 5:44)

·      We have been scattered to show forgiveness (Matt. 6:14)

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 (NKJV)

A few years ago I had a poem sent to me by Mary Hickman — she had recently written it, and once I read it I was inspired to write this devotional.  It's almost as if God had scattered His words into her mind — He then scattered Mary’s poem into my life, and through this devotional He is now scattering it into yours.

After Christ ascended to the heavens, His disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit…

They became passion driven.

Their works were plentiful,

Unite the Jews and Gentiles under one roof,

Write the Gospels as pure, clear and righteous proof,

Teach Christ’s words as the ultimate solution,

While staying one step ahead of persecution.

Collect alms for the poor in Jerusalem, traveling as far away as Macedonia and Achaia

Always passionately driven by the words of the Messiah.

So the first pillars of our faith scattered themselves to;

Unite, write, teach, escape and travel, all for their belief in God…

Can we as Christians scatter and work together to help raze evil’s facade?

Can we not scatter ourselves to pray for just one person, So perhaps their life’s circumstances will not worsen.

Can we not scatter ourselves to minister to a friend in need, And in doing so, plant God’s seed.

Can we not scatter ourselves to help a fellow human being, no matter how small the deed, And see how contagious goodness is to those in need.

Fellow Christians remember the pain and anguish our great and steadfast brethren endured,

So that our place in heaven would be assured.

Turn your pain into passion,

A passion for our Lord,

And you will feel your soul's restored.

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 13:35 how do people know we are disciples of Jesus?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to allow God to scatter his seeds of life through you?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s choose to bloom where we are planted by our Lord, and let us be faithful to continue to scatter the seeds our Lord has given us.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for scattering me where You desired.  Thank You for the seeds of life You have scattered within my heart.  Help me to scatter Your seeds as I go.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
