I Am My Father’s Son

“I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father…Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” John 8:38, 43-44 (NKJV)

Boy, talk about calling it like it was.  Jesus didn’t mince words when dealing with the Jewish people who refused to believe He was the Messiah.  Telling them they weren’t capable of understanding because they weren’t even able to listen to the words He spoke.  They were a tough crowd, with tough hearts, and they were unwilling to receive the truth from God in the flesh.

Not much has changed in our generation with regard to how many people actually receive the Gospel message.  There are still many who are unable to understand, and who are unable or unwilling to listen to God’s word as well.  Jesus states the reason they are unable to understand and receive His word is because they are children of the devil.  Again, this is a very straightforward comment, sternly given to those who are blinded by the lies of Satan.

Jesus said these men were children of the devil because of their unwillingness to handle and hear the truth of God.  And because of their affiliation to their father Satan, they didn’t know the real truth.  They were simply living in a world of lies, false beliefs, and distortions of real truths.  So their family association was wrong, and as a result it produced the things that are not of God.  They were inclined to live out their true father’s desire within their lives, rather than God’s.

We see these same principles in the lives of those who don’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior.  When people are unsaved, they will continuously seek to live out the desires of the flesh.  They will continuously seek to fulfill those temptations, which are thought to bring happiness and contentment. The devil, is alive and working very hard 24 hours a day to deprive all of us of true life, and to distort the truth of God.

The people Jesus had spoken to in the verses above were simply demonstrating the truth of that old saying, “Like father, like son.”  We can see the fruit in our life as to whom we choose to identify with as well.  It has been rightly said, “The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.”

Q:         What does this mean to us as Christian men and women?

We should be looking to our Father to learn everything we can.  He loves us and He is always there to guide and help us.  As we continue to focus upon Him and His word we will find ourselves becoming more like our true Father.

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 8:44, what can we learn about the origin of every lie?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you keeping your eyes upon your heavenly Father and learning from Him, or are you allowing the father of lies to influence your actions and life?

APPLICATION: Let’s choose to look to our Heavenly Father to learn all we can each day.  Let’s seek His leading, wisdom, discernment, and power for our life.

Father, thank You for allowing each of us to be a part of Your family.  We look forward to spending eternity with You, and with all of those who have put their faith in Your Son Jesus, as their personal Lord and Savior.  Help us to see everything in the way You want us to see it.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
