Staying Under His Umbrella

Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways. Psalms 128:1 (NKJV)

Have you ever seen one of those Traveler’s Insurance commercials on TV?  You know the company I am talking about; it’s the one with the big red umbrella.  Traveler’s has painted a pretty successful picture; implying that people can come take refuge under their umbrella for protection, and this has been a part of the company’s advertising campaign going back to the 1950’s.

As I thought about this, I found myself thinking about how God has made this same promise for thousands of years.  All throughout the Old and New Testaments we can see God’s promises of our being blessed if we would simply surrender to His Lordship and submit to His will for our lives.

So here is the proper picture; as Christian believers, we are to be standing under God’s umbrella of shelter and protection. We will call it the umbrella of Lordship.  As long as we stay underneath it we will be protected, and provided for.  We will be empowered with God’s power and authority to stand against the temptations and wiles of the enemy, and to do what He has asked us to do.

Now if we are to step out from under God’s umbrella of Lordship, we are effectively saying, “I don’t want to submit to Your will Lord, and instead I want to follow my own will and desires—I want to be lord of my own life.”  When we do this we start a very bad domino effect, because we are sinning against God and regarding sin within our heart.  When we do this we can be assured our prayers will not be heard by God (Ps. 66:18), and we have quenched the Holy Spirit (1Thess. 5:19).  The result is we begin to lose those things we once had when we were under His Umbrella of protection and provision.  God does this out of His abundant love for us, much like a parent chastening a wayward child.

As I think about this principle, I am encouraged to remember to take captive any thought leading me to independence from the will of my heavenly Father, and to the Lordship of Jesus in my life.  I am reminded that my temporary body will always want the things of this world, and therefore will always be warring against my new nature as a child of God.  I thank God for His umbrella of protection and provision and I choose to stay underneath it today.

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.

STUDY QUESTION:  According to Psalm 128:1 what can we expect if we respect God and choose to walk in His ways?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you under the Lordship and blessings of God’s umbrella, or have you become the lord of your own life?

APPLICATION: Let’s make it our personal goal to surrender to God’s will for every area of our life.

LET’S PRAY: Father, Thank You for Your umbrella of protection and provision in our lives.  We choose to surrender to Your will today and to allow You to be Lord.  Forgive us of those things we have not surrendered in.  Help us to see every area where we need to surrender to You today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
