Time In A Bottle

Time In A Bottle

"LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am.  Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor." Psalms 39:4-5 (NKJV)

Think for just a moment about the billions of granules of sand down at the beach. Now take one granule and place it in a little clear bottle with a cork in it and sit back and look at it.  This one piece of sand will now represent your entire lifetime here on this earth; in this temporary tent we call a body.  Now we must realize the billions of other pieces of sand combined on the beach represent only a fraction of our time to be spent in eternity.

When I think about how short life is by using this picture analogy I find myself looking at my life in a proper perspective with regard to how I should live for eternal purposes.  Think about it for a moment, if we knew we would be done here on earth in the next year, how would we choose to live?

  • Would we choose to be better parents?
  • Would we choose to handle things differently knowing the things causing us anxiety are really not all that important?
  • Would we invest our time more wisely helping others to know the Lord?
  • Would we be more apt to forgive those who offend us?
  • Would we have a greater vision for where we will be spending eternity?
  • Would we decide to stop living for our own pleasure and begin to live solely for God?

Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. 1 Peter 4:1-2 (NKJV)

It is important to remember God created us for a purpose - to glorify God and to have a relationship with Him for eternity.  Our time on earth is just a vapor and it is to prepare us for an endless time.  If we do not realize this truth then life will cease to make sense and we will be filled with despair and emptiness because those things we thought would bring us happiness could never have provided lasting contentment.

I want to encourage you today to think upon your life here on earth.  Our time here is but a vapor but it will impact how you spend eternity.  Let's not get so caught up on what the world holds dear.  Let's decide instead to seek the wisdom of God through the reading of His Word and invest what we learn into our lives and the lives of those around us.  Let's not let the enemy distract us into living for anything else.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 Peter 4:1-2 how should we live?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you living your life in expectation of seeing Jesus at any moment?

APPLICATION: Realize how short life is and choose to spend your time wisely it is the greatest gift from God.

Father, thank You for giving me life.  Thank You for allowing me to learn what You are teaching me.  Help me to continue to see things in the way You do.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
