Leading The Blind

Leading The Blind
Becoming A Guiding Light

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." John 8:12 (NKJV)

Q:    What would you do if you saw a blind person stumbling across a busy street helplessly reaching out their arms in an attempt to feel something to direct their path?

This may seem like a far-fetched question but it makes for a very good analogy.  What I am getting at is a simply point - do you care about someone who cannot see and who is lost?  It is a valid question because we can see Jesus speaking to the Apostle Paul about sending him to help many blind people who were lost.  Jesus told Paul to, "Open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who sanctified by faith in Me." (Acts 26:18).

Jesus wasn't speaking about these people being physically blind, but spiritually blind.  He was concerned because although physical blindness can be disabling, spiritual blindness is deadly. All unbelievers are spiritually blind because Satan has put a veil over their hearts and minds lest they see the truth.  So Jesus gave the command to Paul to go forth and proclaim the gospel so they could see and become spiritually alive.  It is the truth of God's Word that sets us free from this spiritual blindness (John 8:32).

Q:    Can we walk in darkness again once we have seen the light of God's truth?

The sad truth is we can freely choose to walk in darkness even though we have heard the gospel message, and there are even some who have proclaimed Jesus as our Lord and Savior who choose to go back.  It is not my position to say whether they have truly ever made Jesus their Lord or not.  What I do know is this - we need to decide within our hearts which side we want to be on - light or darkness - and then walk accordingly.  If we truly believe in the Gospel message then we need to stay in the light, which leads to God's blessings and eternal life.  All we need to do to stay in the light is to follow Jesus by abiding in Him and in His Word (John 15) and we will remain in His light and not walk in darkness (John 8:12).

I want to encourage you today to continue to follow Jesus and to help those around you who are spiritually blind.  It is a matter of eternal life or death.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Jesus' words in John 8:12, what can we expect if we follow Him?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you following Jesus in every aspect of your life?

APPLICATION: Seek to follow Christ and to pattern your life after Him.  Ask God each day to transform you by the renewing of your mind as you read your Bible (Rom. 12:1-2).

Father, thank You for leading me out of the darkness and into Your amazing light.  Help me to lead the blind people around me to Your light by sharing Your love and truth with them.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
