The Times They Are A Changing

The Times, They are a Changing

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron. 1Timothy 4:1-2 (NKJV)

We constantly hear people speaking of change, or the possibility of it at least, which means that many people are not happy or content with where they may be at in life.  Bob Dylan said it well in a song 4-decades ago, Oh the times they are a changing.  But I don't think Bob even had a glimpse of what was to happen.

It's funny how we all admittedly want things better, and yet it continues to change in many ways for the worse.

Q:   Why is that?

A:    Well, for one, we can't agree on how things should be done.

I think that's because most people want things to change their way because they feel their way is best.  What one person wants or may even feel compelled to be an advocate for, offends the person standing next to him, and vice versa. Well, the fact is, that our way will always be wrong unless it is exactly as the Lord wants it, and directs it.  Just saying this truth will bring controversy because those who oppose God will not want to be held accountable in any form or fashion with regards to the choices they have or are going to make.

We can take the subjects of abortion and homosexuality as an example.  Open these subjects up for discussion and within minutes there is a good chance that you will have a full-blown argument on your hands.

Again, the reason is because there will be someone who wants to talk about their right to choose, and their choice will be the one that fits what they want to do. There is free choice, and rightfully so because God is the one who gives us free choice; but that doesn't mean that we will freely choose the way He would want us to.  There is usually a lot of time being spent within the discussion defending the right to do something, but not much is given to whether the decision is really right by God's standards.  And that my friend is the real issue!

The Apostle Paul was speaking of this type of person in 1Timothy 4:1,2.  He is referring to those who not only advocate false beliefs, but also teach them to others.  He actually declares that they are hypocritical liars, which implies that they know better.  He is talking about those who have deliberately forsaken the faith, and who are teaching this false way of living.  These people have done these things and have defended it as their legal right, and in the process they have seared their consciences, and therefore they don't even feel the effects within the chambers of their minds as a result of their willful wrong doings.

We need to guard ourselves against being jaded to corporate sin.  This is simply sin committed on a larger scale, from a community or a society.   We need to be faithful in calling sin, sin!  We need to repent of anything that is not in God's will, and that is wrong according to His Word, and we don't need anyone telling us that it is okay to live this way, because it isn't.  If we continue to be involved in corporate sin, it will affect our Christian walk and our relationship with God.

It shouldn't be our goal to be politically correct with everyone we meet, but in love and grace, share the Word of God with everyone we possibly can; even if it is not received in the way it was intended.

Hey Christian, don't let any person, trend in society or any group of people tell you or influence you into doing things that are not right according to God's Word.  Hold fast to what you know to be right.

STUDY QUESTION: What does Paul warn us about in the Scriptures above?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to put God and His Word first in your life over any view that man has?  Are you willing to call and identify sin for what it is, and hold others accountable when they defend it as free choice?

APPLICATION: Study the Scriptures daily and learn what God says and teaches about things so that when you are confronted with choices and different points of view, you can confront them in love and in truth.

Father, Thank You for Your Word.  Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit to live within us once we've chosen to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.  Help me to choose properly today, and to be able to speak the truth in love to those who are freely choosing to sin, and who are caught up in the ability to make the choice, rather than choosing the proper choice.  In Jesus precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
